Bilingual Meeting: Ubuntu Book Club brings together students from the Federal Institute of São Paulo, Matão Campus, Cornell University, and several other institutions to discuss books by Black authors and explore themes related to identity and representation in a safe and respectful environment.
This semester, we will discuss the book "Sobrevivendo no Inferno" by the legendary Brazilian hip-hop group Os Racionais MC's.
At the turn of the 1990s, Racionais MC’s emerged as one of the most important phenomena in Brazilian culture. Praised by critics, the album Sobrevivendo no Inferno (Surviving in Hell) sold more than 1.5 million copies.
Now published as a book, the raps of Racionais MC’s are the most polished reflection of a society that has become humanly unviable—a radical, aesthetically brilliant attempt to survive it.
"It was with Sobrevivendo no Inferno that Black and marginalized youth found their foundation. Because of this album, many people graduated in self-esteem instead of enrolling in the school of crime." ― Sérgio Vaz
