"LGBTQ rights are Western values" is a trope repeated often by leaders in Asia, Africa and Latin America, and even here in the United States. But the historical record suggests otherwise: Queerness was generally accepted across many cultures, and it was colonialism and modernity that undermined this tolerance. What implications does this have for queer immigrants in this country?

Sarah Ngu, a writer who was born in Borneo, Malaysia and lives in New York City, will give a lecture that weaves in personal stories and academic research, with a strong focus on Southeast Asia. She attends Forefront Brooklyn Church and is the cofounder of ChurchClarity.com.
