Latinx Town Hall - gauging interest in a Latina/o Studies Major at Cornell University!

  • McGraw Hall, 165

Recently, a growing number of students have shown active and persistent interest in a Latina/o Studies Major, and so we are hoping to hear some feedback from all those interested or who wish to learn more. We would be grateful for your input.

At its core, the Latina/o Studies major would give students the opportunity to develop a transnational and comparative lens of Latinidad by learning about the diverse and complex Latinx communities in the United States. This interdisciplinary major would allow students to chose from a wider selection of an eclectic mix of courses, from the disciplines of: History, Anthropology, Literature, Performing and Media Arts, Government, Sociology, Music, and more.

This major could be supplemental to any major a student may already have, whether as a second major for Arts & Sciences students, or pursued through the Concurrent Degree program for those who are eligible. Students majoring in Latina/o Studies will be required to take a standard minimum of nine courses.

We would like students to note that the creation of a major is a multi-year process and current students will likely not see the final outcome of this endeavor; however, current students are essential to establishing a Latina/o Studies Major for future Cornellians.
