Free Speech and Fashion: A Conversation with Mary Beth Tinker

  • Martha Van Rensselaer Hall, G155

Join us for a conversation with free speech activist Mary Beth Tinker of the landmark supreme court case Tinker v. Des Moines Independent Community School District, which affirmed First Amendment rights for students and teachers at public schools and established that clothing and accessories could be a form of constitutionally-protected symbolic speech. This is a hybrid event, with audience in person and Tinker joining by Zoom. This event is part of the academic theme year and the exhibition Fashioning the Bounds of Free Speech in the Cornell Fashion + Textile Collection and Johnson Museum of Art.
