The Eastern Door, a newspaper born out of crisis
In 1990, two Mohawk communities were surrounded by Quebec Police and the Canadian Army for 78 days. It was called the Oka Crisis. In the aftermath of this incident, a newspaper was born to inform the community of Kahnawake and to combat misinformation spread by the mainstream media. It grew from volunteers, a shoestring budget into a vibrant and award winning weekly newspaper. This is their story.
