Spaces of Violence: Migrating in Search of Safety

This event will be presented by Professor Jane Juffer of the Cornell FGSS department and Ingrid, a Salvadoran woman who spent more than two years imporisoned at the Buffalo Federal Detention Facility. Their presentation analyzes the violence that women and sexual minorities face in the Northern Triangle countries of Central America - violence that compels them to leave their homes and seek sanctuary in the U.S. - Mexico border. Once having arrived in the U.S., refugees often encounter abuse and mistreatment in immigration detention centers. We examine the particular conditions shaping these journeys and he possibilites for agency within these spaces. We also ask how North American activists can help create safe spaces for these refigees. drawing on our work in the Cornell Anti-Detention Alliance.
