In 2016, during the United Nations conference on Housing and Sustainable Urban Development Habitat III in Quito, the members states adopted the New Urban Agenda and the Quito Declaration on Cities and Human Settlements for All. These agreements recognized the need of a shared vision to work towards sustainable urban and territorial development. The presentation gives an account of the state of the art of urban development in Latin America and the Caribbean: progress, setbacks, omissions, and challenges of the New Urban Agenda and Sustainable Development Goals in the region.

Paola Siclari currently lives in Santiago de Chile and works as an international consultant ECLAC-DDSAH on urban policies and on cities and climate change in Latin America and the Caribbean. She is working on her doctoral thesis focusing on infrastructure, inequality, and human development under the supervision of Michael Cohen, William Morrish, Domenico Patassini and Salvatore Moreli. Paola believes that by changing the vision and reconciling conflicting interests it is possible to move towards a more sustainable and fair development.
