“Being Muslim and Female in Burma: Two Perspectives,” by Dr. Thet Su Htwe and Kyaw Thein, CMS Seminar Series

  • Morrill Hall, 404

Dr. Thet Su Htwe and Thaw Thein are two activists involved with women's issues in Burma, now called Myanmar. They are important voices in trying to build civil society in that country, which is coming out of near-isolation imposed by a socialist regime for roughly half a century. In this presentation, they will talk about the everyday plight of women in Burma/Myanmar. They will also explicitly focus on the ways that women' issues intersect with Burma's Muslim minority, including the Rohingya, who have been in the news almost daily for several years now. This is because of ongoing persecution in the country, a matter now being looked at closely by the United Nations and other international institutions.
