Towards New Destinations Grant

The University Diversity Council holds a grant program annually to support and enhance college and unit diversity initiatives. These one-year grants range between $1,000 and $7,000 each. The total amount available for these awards is $35,000. For background information that may be useful in crafting initiatives, please reference pages related to Open Doors, Open Hearts, Open Minds.

Eligibility

Grant proposals will be solicited from and submitted by college/unit diversity councils or by college/unit diversity representatives (individuals reporting to a dean or vice president and managing responsibilities for diversity planning).

Proposals may represent opportunities to expand successful annual initiatives, to extend initiatives with limited scope or size, or provide for new initiatives or opportunities beyond the three designated in Toward New Destinations reporting.  Proposals may cross college and unit boundaries for collaborative purposes.

Proposals must either be connected to an annual initiatives, or must have approval from relevant college or unit leadership. Proposals  transcending college/unit boundaries must be supported by at least one college/unit leader.

Format and Timing

Proposals should be presented in the same format and with the same rationale as used in Toward New Destinations annual initiatives and reporting.  Comments should specifically describe the proposed use of the funds requested.  Where requests generate ongoing funding needs, provide plans/commitments for future support. The grant proposal form is online and structured to address each required area.

The grant application for 2017-18 is not open.

Key Criteria

The Toward New Destinations grant program is an opportunity to enhance annual initiatives viewed as experimental in regard to a unit or college's ongoing diversity strategies.  Colleges and units are encouraged to make requests related to activities that might benefit from start-up funding or that are the result of a new or creative direction within the college/unit. The grant should be viewed as a pilot or seeding opportunity, which should (if successful) be sustainable beyond the one-year term of the grant with funding committed by the relevant college/unit or another form of support like an external grant/gift. Proposals for support of new initiatives, beyond the required three annual initiatives, are encouraged.  The University Diversity Council will assess all proposals for demonstration or likelihood of ongoing support beyond the grant period.  Similarly, the University Diversity Council will assess all proposals for quality of alignment and incorporation within the unit’s diversity plan.

Toward New Destinations awards are made by the UDC membership.
